I bought my Glock 17C in January of 2002. I had a very limited experience with guns in general. I wanted a new hobby during the colder time of the year, and for personal protection in my home.
Being a new shooter I know I'm biased since Glock has been the only gun I've ever owned so far, but I do have to say I'm very happy with it. It's easy to shoot and easy to maintain with less than 40 individual parts. Less parts means less problems, in my opinion.
So, if you're looking to get a quality handgun, Glock should be at the top of your list.
On March 03, 2004, I sold my Glock 17C and bought a Smith and Wesson 908. The main reason I chose the 908 was it was single and double action with an external hammer, and it's the same size as a 19. Also, I wanted an American made gun by an American company.
As far as tactical applications and total ease of use, I'd still have to give the edge to Glock. You can't go wrong with a Glock, and my next purchase will most likely be a 19.

I sold the 908. It was too hard for me to fieldstrip, and that's perhaps the most critical element for someone with use of only one arm. If it wasn't for that, I would've kept it.
The Beretta 92FS has caught my eye... it fits my hand better than the GLOCK...
